What to expect: Day 1 – From Bergen to the Sognefjord
From Bergen into the mountains
Our journey begins in Bergen, the gateway to the fjords. As we head east, we visit the historic Dale of Norway factory outlet, famous for its world-class wool sweaters. We continue through the town of Voss, home to the stone church from 1277 and the ancient St. Olaf’s cross.
Waterfalls and the heights of Stalheim
Prepare for spectacular views at Tvindefossen, a 110-meter cascading waterfall. From there, we visit the historic Stalheim Hotel. A short walk leads us to a lookout with a breathtaking view of the Nærøydalen valley, a part of the UNESCO World Heritage area. On our descent, we experience the thrills of the steep Stalheimskleiva road (subject to seasonal opening) and the twin waterfalls, Sivlefossen and Stalheimsfossen.
The UNESCO Nærøyfjord and Viking history
In the cozy village of Gudvangen, we highly recommend a 2-hour fjord cruise on the pristine Nærøyfjord—often called the most beautiful fjord in the world. Alternatively, you can step back in time at Njardarheimr, a real Viking town where you can meet modern-day Vikings and try your hand at axe throwing.
Flåm and the Stegastein lookout
From Flåm, you have the option to ride the world-famous Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) up to Myrdal, an engineering marvel with stunning mountain views. We conclude the day by driving up to the Stegastein viewpoint, suspended 640 meters above the Aurlandsfjord, before crossing the mountains to our overnight stop in the Sognefjord region.
What to expect: Day 2 – Glaciers and stave churches
Ancient architecture and the blue ice
We start the day by visiting the Urnes Stave Church (UNESCO), the oldest of its kind in Norway, dating back to 1140. Our main destination is the Nigardsbreen glacier, an arm of the Jostedalsbreen—the largest glacier on mainland Europe. Here, we can take a small boat across the glacial lake and hike up to experience the mesmerizing blue ice up close.
Glacier museums and the book town
On our return, we can visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum in Fjærland, a village also famous for its unique «Book Town» where old farmhouses are filled with thousands of books.
The scenic return to Bergen
We finish our 2-day adventure with a scenic cruise or drive along the Sognefjord, passing the monumental Statue of Fridtjov in Vangsnes, before heading back over the mountains to Bergen.

You will see the Sivlefossen (142m) and Stalheimsfossen (126m) waterfalls on either side of the road. (Note: If the road is closed due to maintenance, it is still possible to walk parts of it).
Gudvangen and the Viking town In the village of Gudvangen, located under the 840-meter tall Kjelfossen waterfall, we recommend visiting the Viking Town «Njardarheimr». Here you can meet modern-day Vikings and learn about their crafts and culture.
The Nærøyfjord (UNESCO) We highly recommend a 2-hour fjord cruise from Gudvangen to Flåm. This fjord is on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its pristine beauty. Cruises can be arranged by passenger ferry or private RIB (tickets not included in the base price).
Flåm and the Flåm railway In Flåm, you have the option to take the famous Flåmsbana train to Myrdal. It climbs from sea level to 867 meters through stunning scenery. Your guide will wait for you in Flåm while you enjoy the ride, or accompany you if you choose to bike back down.

Crossing the Sognefjord Finally, we arrive at the main Sognefjord and cross it by car ferry before arriving at our overnight destination, usually in the town of Sogndal.
Detailed itinerary for day 2 – Glaciers and Sognefjord highlights

Jostedalen valley The road to the glacier goes through the Jostedalen valley – a fairy-tale landscape with a raging river, waterfalls, and small mountain villages.
Nigardsbreen glacier and blue ice At Nigardsbrevatnet lake, our hike to the glacier begins. You can walk or take a small boat to the end of the lake (saving 30 minutes of walking). From there, a 45-minute hike on uneven terrain takes us to the foot of the glacier. Here you can experience the famous blue ice of Nigardsbreen, an arm of the Jostedalsbreen glacier (the largest on mainland Europe). Note: Stay at a safe distance from the ice front.

Frequently asked questions about the Grand Sognefjord tour
Is accommodation included in the tour price?
No, hotel stays are not included. However, we are happy to recommend the best hotels in Sogndal or the surrounding area and help you with the booking process.
Do we need to book fjord cruises and train tickets in advance?
Yes, for the Flåm Railway and Nærøyfjord cruises, we highly recommend booking in advance as they sell out quickly. We can help you find the right departures that fit our itinerary.
Can we change the plan during the trip?
Absolutely. This is a private, customizable tour. If you want to spend more time at the glacier and skip a museum, or vice versa, Vlad and Jana will adapt the schedule to your wishes.
What should we bring for the glacier hike?
Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential for the walk to the Nigardsbreen glacier viewpoint, as the terrain consists of rocks and uneven paths. We also recommend dressing in layers; the air coming off the glacier is significantly cooler than in the valley, even on a sunny summer day.
